A Clinical Study of Nasal Allergy



Abstract
Much effort has been executed in the study of allergens which may cause or exacerbate allergic rhinitis. On these day, development of allergology and various studies for allergic rhinitis has been performed.
There are various diagnostic procedures for allergic rhinitis, such as anterior rhinoscopic examination, skin test for specific allergen extract and detailed history taking which is most important. Above all things, correct diagnosis is clinically most important.
The purpose of this study is to provide the guidance of diagnosis and management for allergic rhinitis.
125 cases of allergic rhinitis diagnosed as allergic rhinitis at allergic clinic of Ewha Womans University Hospital during the past 7 years from March, 1983 to January, 1990 were analyzed.
The results were as follow;
1. Male to female ratio was 1.1 : 1 and peak age incidence was in the age group 10 to 19 and 30 to 39.
2. Predominant symptoms were nasal obstruction, watery rhinorrhea and sneezing.
3. Seasonal predominance was observed in 68.8 % and allergic symptom sustained in 31.2 % throughout the year.
4. Family history for other allergic disease was observed in 51.2 % of allergic rhinitis.
5. The color of nasal mucosa was normal in 51.2 %, pale in 45.6 % and congestive in 3.2%.
6. Finding of P.N.S. X-ray was normal in 58.4 % and abnormal in 41.617o.
7. Eosinophilia in blood was 29.6 % and serum IgE level increased in 47.2%.
8. Positive response for allergic skin test was 74.4 %.
9. Common positive allergens were house dust mite in 65.6 % and house dust in 32.0%.
